Healthy Gas Station Options While Traveling
Spring has arrived, and with that comes a rise in travel. Whether it’s for spring break or family vacations, families and friends are preparing for fun-filled road trips.
When traveling, pit stops for gas are a great time to not only stretch your legs – but grab some tasty snacks! While packing snacks is always an option, most times, our schedules may be running tight, or we just don’t want to go through the hassle. So, while on the go, gas station snacks tend to be the only option until you can get a proper meal in.
When you hear gas station food, “healthy” doesn’t immediately come to mind. We envision items such as pop, candy, chips, cakes and anything else sugary you can think of. While these items are quite tasty and satisfying, they aren’t the healthiest options and won’t refuel you and your family (along with your vehicle), for the next leg of your journey. Luckily, there are healthy options that are not only nutritious, but delicious!
HEALTHY DAIRY OPTIONS
GREEK YOGURT
Make a beeline to the refrigeration section and grab a scrumptious Greek yogurt. You’ll get calcium, potassium, zinc, vitamins B6 and B12 in every spoonful, and it’s packed with protein!
STRING CHEESE
This is the perfect snack that will give you a boost of calcium, vitamin C, protein and fiber. It’s low in calories, and the best part? It will keep you full longer! You can also pair it with a bag of pretzels!
CHOCOLATE MILK
If you want a sweet fix with a source of carbs and protein that will leave you full, refueled and satisfied, chocolate milk is the way to go!
ADDITIONAL HEALTHY OPTIONS
PROTEIN BARS
Protein bars come in a bunch of different delicious flavors (like chocolate sea salt and peanut butter), and they’ll keep you full for longer thanks to all the protein, plant-based fats, and fiber they have from the nuts, dates and egg whites they’re made with.
HUMMUS
Most gas stations carry single serving packages with hummus and a dipper, such as crackers or carrots. This tasty snack filled with protein and fiber will fill you up and keep you satisfied longer.
FRUIT
If you’re looking for a light, healthy snack, grab an apple, banana or orange that’s usually located near the checkout counter.
ALMONDS
If you’re looking for a satiating snack where you won’t be tempted to grab an unhealthy choice ten minutes later, grab some almonds! They contain healthy fats, reduce your risk of heart disease, and come in a variety of flavors.
JERKY
High in protein and low in carbs, fat and calories, jerky is a great healthy snack for adults and kids! Mix it up with beef and turkey options.
DARK CHOCOLATE SQUARES
Yes, dark chocolate can be healthy in moderation! It’s an excellent way to not only satisfy your sweet tooth, but also stay on track with your dietary and health goals. Dark chocolate contains healthy antioxidants and has been shown to reduce blood pressure.
When on the go, it can be a challenge to stay the course and eat healthy. Being aware of nutritious options for you and your family is key. Food is fuel for our bodies, and the healthier the snack, the more fueled and better everyone will feel.
