Breakfast and a Book returns in 2023 with two LIVE virtual events! Each 30-minute session will feature story time, tips to fuel up with breakfast and the opportunity to ask a celebrity questions. The books and discussion are geared towards students in Kindergarten through 3rd grades.

Celebrate Black History Month with Detroit Pistons mascot, Hooper, and Aaron Scott as they read The Day You Begin by Jacqueline Woodson at Source Booksellers in Detroit, MI. The story reminds us that we all feel like outsiders sometimes and how brave it is that we go forth anyway.

Celebrate National Reading Month and National School Breakfast Week with Farmer Courtney as she reads Chocolate Milk, Por Favor: Celebrating Diversity with Empathy from inside a barn. Written by Maria Dismondy, the story shows how being different is delicious and that kindness and empathy are truly universal languages.

1. Looking for a fun tracking sheet for your students? Students can write their goal for the week and check off the boxes as they complete each day.

2. Download and edit a letter to send home to your students’ parents and/or guardians. Customize the timeframe and prize. Does your district have a school mascot that can visit? Invite them in to celebrate breakfast and reading!

Featuring soccer player and author Emily Eitzman reading Grandpa’s Advice
Emily Eitzman plays for the AFC Ann Arbor’s women’s soccer team and the U of M club team. She is involved in several community projects and recently authored and illustrated the book, Grandpa’s Advice. The story about a young girl and her grandpa teaches about kindness, gratitude, and hard work. Emily’s passion to increase diversity in children’s literature has led her to start the project, Raising Good People. Read more about Emily

Detroit Piston Saddiq Bey reads All Are Welcome by Alexandra Penfold
Saddiq Bey is in his second season with the Detroit Pistons, averaging almost 16 points per game. He will be reading All Are Welcome by Alexandra Penfold to celebrate Black History Month. Featuring author Carol McCloud reading Have You Filled a Bucket Today?
Have You Filled a Bucket Today? encourages students to express kindness, appreciation, and love by filling other’s buckets and their own bucket. Carol, the “Bucket Lady”, will read her storybook and talk about her goal to inspire individuals to grow in kindness, self-control, resilience and forgiveness. Read more about Carol McCloud
