The Best Grilled Cheese Sandwich

This recipe will give you the perfect, classic grilled cheese sandwich. To take it up a notch, check out our suggestions for additional fillings.

Ingredients

  • 2 slices bread (wheat, white, sourdough, rye, etc.)
  • 2 slices cheese, good melting cheese (Munster, Cheddar, Provolone, American)
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened

Carbohydrate: 27g (9%)
Protein: 18g (36%)
Total Fat: 53g (82%)
Saturated Fat: 42g (210%)
Trans Fat: 1.5g
Cholesterol: 110mg (37%)
Sodium: 970mg (40%)
Calcium: 50%

Instructions

Pre-heat a cast iron pan or skillet over medium-low heat.

Place cheese slices onto bread and butter the outside of one slice of bread.

Place buttered side of bread face down in the preheated pan. Butter top slice of bread. Turn the sandwich when the bottom has browned, approximately 2 minutes. Continue to flip to ensure even browning until cheese is fully melted. The entire cooking process should take 5-7 minutes.

Remove sandwich from pan and enjoy immediately.

Try some of these additions to make your grilled cheese even more delicious: • Bacon • Tomato slices • Pesto • Caramelized onions • Sliced apples

    OMG! I don’t know how I connected with your website from California, but I am eternally grateful! This is totally the BEST grilled cheese EVER! I never thought to use a variety of cheeses! What a GOURMET sandwich! Next time I will add tomatoes and maybe even bacon …oh gosh…sauteed onions…as suggested in the notes. I’ve just added this site to my Favorites and will be back to try other recipes. Thanks so much!
