Dairy farmers are taking big steps TODAY to reach the dairy community's goal of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050! Here are just a few of the ways farmers are working to get there every day:

- 🌱 Soil Management: The increasing adoption of techniques such as low-till/no-till crop farming and proper use of manure as fertilizer is helping to reduce soil erosion and improve soil health on farms!

- 💩 Manure Management: Some classic and innovative sustainable moves farmers are making include using manure as fertilizer, composting it to make soil amendments, and processing it in anaerobic digesters to produce renewable energy.

- 💧 Water Conservation: On a dairy farm, water is used and recycled in multiple unique ways, from hydrating cows to cooling milk to cleaning pens. Other water conservation measures include rainwater harvesting.

- 🖥️ Adopting New Technologies: New technologies in precision agriculture, data analytics, and more are enabling farmers to improve efficiency and reduce waste to meet their sustainability goals. For example, sensors that monitor cow health and productivity can help farmers optimize feed and water consumption.

- ⚡ Producing Renewable Energy: From solar panels to wind turbines to cow power from methane digestors, some farmers are starting to power their farms and communities using eco-friendly forms of renewable energy.

By adopting these and other sustainable practices, dairy farmers are hard at work implementing new, innovative strategies to best care for their cows and the earth. 🥰🌎🐄

While some folks face unique barriers to certain professions (including those in agriculture), the truth is there's no one clear-cut image of what a dairy farmer looks like! This National Ag Day & #WomensHistoryMonth , we'd like to celebrate all the wonderful women in the dairy community for the work they're doing (and have been doing for AGES) to bring sustainable nutrition to the world. In Michigan, there are plenty of women on the farm propelling the dairy industry forward to feed the world, pioneering new solutions for sustainable agriculture, all while continuing to provide excellent care for their animals.

We all know that electrolytes are related to hydration, but how does that work? 🤔

Electrolytes are essential minerals including sodium, calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium; all of which play important roles in maintaining fluid balance throughout the body. If we don't get enough of the electrolytes we need, that makes it harder for fluids to be moved to where they're needed in the body, impacting hydration and hindering brain and muscle function. For hydration, it's necessary both to get the fluids your body needs, but also to stock your body with the electrolytes it needs to make good use of those fluids.
