New Technology on the Farm
We recently purchased a new technology for feeding milk to calves. It is a machine called a Milk Mobile available from Grober Nutrition in Canada. This is one of five in the U.S.
The Milk Mobile is a four-wheeled stainless steel milk mixer equipped with an electronic portion-controlled dosing pump. The calf feeder can bulk mix up to 100 liters of milk replacer, and then wheel it directly to our individual calf pens. (Milk replacer is like baby formula for our calves. It is pasteurized and provides a consistent amount of protein and fat that they may not get otherwise.) The dosing gun can be set with the turn of a knob to deliver the exact amount of milk to each calf. The Milk Mobile has an internal thermometer and measuring scale. The mixer motor on the unit is powerful and mixes the milk replacer thoroughly in 30 seconds.
This machine has reduced the calf feeding time by more than an hour per day, and has greatly improved the accuracy in the feed that each calf receives. The milk is now mixed right, fed at the right temperature and delivered in the proper quantity, which helps us take great care of our calves. The machine is easy to clean and, as a bonus, is fun to operate!
