These ice cream bars go beyond traditional vanilla ice cream and chocolate coating. Their flavors include “Green Dragon,” “Belly Full of Hoppiness” and “Fancy Pants Raspberry.” Founder Chris Morin initially sold his ice cream bars from a used food truck that he drove around the streets of Whitehall, MI. It has now grown to selling ice cream bars in hundreds of locations and events around Michigan and a storefront in Whitehall. I spoke with Chris to find out more about his ice cream bar passion and business.
How did Ice Box Brand ice cream bars start?
I went to culinary school and was working in a restaurant. I heard about a food truck that was for sale and went to check it out. I decided to buy the truck and from there Ice Box Brand ice cream bars was created. Many of the staff on my new team worked with me in the restaurant industry.
How many flavors of ice cream bars?
We have created over 50 flavors so far. Some are specialty flavors created in partnership with [others].. We partner with many [businesses] around the state including several breweries. Other flavors are ideas turned into creations and put on the menu. Many of the flavors can only be found at our brick and mortar store in Muskegon.
What is your most popular flavor?
Green Dragon. It is made with an Oreo and Butterfinger cookie layer, mint chocolate chip ice cream, semi-sweet chocolate, topped with Oreo pieces and Butterfinger crumbs.
How many ice cream bars are produced each day?
About 1,000 bars are created each day.

Where do you get your ice cream mix?
We partner with Country Dairy in nearby New Era and pick-up our ice cream mix every Thursday.
Tell me about your brick and mortar location.
It is a 1948 gas station and has a lot of character. We found the building and it was a great fit especially with a large space in the back for storage. We spent several months updating the space – learned as we went along and did it ourselves.
