Dairy Vocabulary: Milking Machine, Milking Parlor, Bulk Tank
Growing up on a dairy farm, there are many words that I hear and use every day that you’ve probably never heard of. I thought it would be fun to share some of these words with you, and tell you what they mean.
Milking Machine – electronic machines we attach to the udders on our dairy cows to get the milk.
Milking Parlor – the building on our dairy where cows go to be milked twice a day; our milking parlor is a parallel parlor which means the cows are lined up in two rows with 10 cows on each side.
Bulk Tank – a refrigerated tank that holds the milk from our cows until the milk tank truck comes to our farm to deliver the milk to a processing plant.
You can see what our milking parlor looks like and see how the milk travels from the milking machine to the bulk tank here.
