Dairy Vocabulary: Milk Truck, Processing Plant, Pasteurization
Growing up on a dairy farm, there are many words that I hear and use every day that you’ve probably never heard of. I thought it would be fun to share some of these words with you, and tell you what they mean.
Milk Truck — This is a large, refrigerated truck that comes to our dairy once a day to pick up our milk. The truck picks up milk from several dairies and delivers it to the processing plant.
Processing Plant — This is where the milk from our cows is made into dairy products and packaged for you to buy at the grocery store or enjoy at school or restaurants.
Pasteurization — At the processing plant, milk is pasteurized. That means that it is heated to a really high temperature, then cooled immediately. Since the dairy industry began using this process over a century ago, pasteurization has been recognized around the world as an essential tool for ensuring that milk and dairy products are safe.
