On our dairy farm we raise Holstein cows. Although the cows are usually black and white, sometimes one is born with brown and white spots. It doesn’t happen very often — we have three on the farm right now.
When school kids visit our dairy, they ask if the brown and white cows are the ones that make chocolate milk. I always respond with, “Unfortunately not, although it would be nice!” I explain to the parents that the cows are brown and white due to a recessed gene. All cows produce wholesome and delicious milk that is then made into other dairy products like cheese, yogurt and even flavored milk!
We love to share our dairy farming story with kids and adults who tour our dairy, and to answer all kinds of questions they have about cows and dairy farming.
