Celebrating National Nutrition Month with our own dairy-loving Registered Dietitians
Although it may feel like a nutrition-themed holiday every day for registered dietitians, National Nutrition Month actually only comes around once a year. Celebrated in March, it’s an opportunity to highlight not only the benefits of a balanced diet, but the ways in which registered dietitians help inspire, equip, and educate others on how to make the best decisions possible when it comes to choosing the foods we eat on a regular basis.
Our dietitians here at the United Dairy Industry of Michigan are no different. We all work hard every day to help equip individuals with the knowledge they need to make informed food decisions. From helping schools launch wellness initiatives through the Fuel Up to Play 60 program to creating nutrition education resources for events across the state, educating people is what we’re here to do.
Since our team of dietitians are always looking for ways to help inspire you to eat your best, we thought it would be fitting to share our favorite dairy foods and the reasons behind why we love them. Our favorites can be your favorites and as we raise a glass of milk in honor of registered dietitian nutritionists everywhere, we hope you’ll take the opportunity to join us in adding at least one nutrient-rich food to your meal plan today. It doesn’t necessarily have to be one of our favorites, but we’ve got some pretty good reasons for you to celebrate National Nutrition Month and National Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day with dairy.
Janice Jackson, our nutrition marketing specialist, is a mom and dietitian. Her favorite go-to dairy option? Why, smoothies of course.
For Lois McBean, a registered dietitian who has worked with the United Dairy Industry of Michigan for thirty years, understands the benefits dairy can provide probably better than anyone else. Her favorite? Cheese!
Our school nutrition program manager, Emily, loves coming up with fun ways to engage students in school cafeterias across the state through innovative initiatives with school foodservice directors and staff. Her family also benefits from her nutrition expertise at each meal.
Brianna, our school wellness specialist, also enjoys milk at meals. Working primarily with our Fuel Up to Play 60 schools, she understands how impactful good nutrition can be when it comes to growth and development.
Another fun milk option? Chocolate milk. Yes, even dietitians can love chocolate milk and we do. Melissa Gerharter, our manager of sports nutrition marketing and certified sports nutrition specialist, recommends chocolate milk as a post-workout recovery drink.
Chocolate milk could also potentially work in a smoothie – a dairy-rich favorite not only for Janice, but for Anne Guyer, executive director of school programming. For Anne, incorporating low-fat milk and Greek yogurt is a great way to start the day.
Sharon Toth, UDIM’s CEO, is also a registered dietitian. As such, milk has been a nutrient-rich staple for her and her family for many years.
As for me? Well, I typically enjoy dairy in a variety of ways. From milk in my morning coffee, Greek yogurt at lunch, and cheese incorporated into most of my dinners, I easily get in my three servings a day. My current favorite though? Cottage cheese. It also happens to be a favorite for my entire family, finicky kids included!
