Welcoming a new life and saving another
This cute little jersey calf was born recently on our farm. The majority of our cows are black and white Holsteins, so she really stands out and is sure to receive a lot of extra spoiling!
After delivering this calf, the mom had a few problems. We keep a close eye on all moms and new babies so we noticed right away that she had milk fever.
These are the symptoms of milk fever:
- droopy/cold ears
- staggering around when walking, and
- bad balance
5-8% of all cows get milk fever and it happens because the calcium in their blood stream gets depleted because it is all going toward milk production. Milk fever can be deadly if not treated quickly. We gave
this new mom some calcium intravenously and she recovered in a few minutes.
