Take a hike
The hot, muggy summer is slowly fading into autumn. The weather is definitely more comfortable for both us and dairy cows. As a veterinarian, it’s great to see the farm animals that I care for in a healthier, less stressful environment.
One way my wife, Ruthanne, and I reconnect and de-stress is through our love of outdoor activities. Last weekend we went hiking in the Nordhouse Dunes State Forest, located north of Ludington, on the shores of Lake Michigan.
We decided to make it a backpacking trip, so we packed up our stuff and left Friday morning. We ate lunch when we arrived, then backpacked for two miles.
We went through the dunes out to Lake Michigan beach. It was the perfect spot to set up our camp.
We cooked our dinner on our camp stove, and ate it looking out over Lake Michigan. We used our water filter to purify some lake water to drink, and ended the day watching a beautiful sunset over Lake Michigan
We did manage to forget our flashlight, however, and had to go to bed with the sun.
The next morning, we packed up and hiked out. It was a short trip, but lots of fun.
This is such a great time of the year to hike, I would encourage you to find an area near you and take advantage of it! If you are a hiker, where is your favorite place to venture? We are always looking for a great place to explore.
