Summer Snacking Made Easy
Schoooooool’s Out For Summer and you know what that means… snack time becomes that much more important! Eating healthy can be a simple and fun activity for kids and adults of all ages.
The most important thing to keep in mind is that you need to make snacks work for you and your family by choosing nutrient-rich foods; this includes foods from the dairy, grain, fruit, vegetable, and protein groups. Snacks provide essential vitamins and minerals and have a super power that can really boost your energy between meals.
Here are some quick and easy tips to satisfy you and your kids’ snack cravings on the sunny days of summer:
Involve kids in the kitchen. Kids are more likely to try something new and different if they have had their hands in the preparation. Make it a weekly ritual to try one new snack recipe each week and encourage your kids to have input on the foods that are made!
Plan snacks ahead of time. Keep a variety of nutritious ready-to-eat supplies on hand, such as whole-grain crackers and low-fat cheese, or individual yogurt snacks for those times you need something on-the-go.
Keep portion control in mind. Pre-portion snacks and put them in small baggies or plastic containers. Eating directly from a multi-serving container increases the likelihood that we’ll eat more than our share!
